Position Overview

The MIS Security Specialist will plan and carry out exciting, complex assignments and develop new methods and approaches in a wide variety of IT specialties. They will evaluate new and enhanced approaches to deliver IT services; test and optimize the functionality of systems, networks, and data; and define technical requirements. They will be responsible for providing various forms of computer-related technical assistance and improving the efficiency of the work of staff through the use of technology. Among the areas of responsibility for the Information Technology Specialist are security, maintaining agency network and systems, meeting agency hardware and software needs, providing technical support and training for front-line staff in person as well as remote helpdesk.

Qualifications and Experience

    • A degree or diploma in Information Technology, Networking, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and hands-on experience
    • Relevant certifications (e.g., CompTIA and/or Microsoft), with demonstrated experience in network design, implementation, and security
    • Experience working within Microsoft environments, including Azure, Entra ID, Microsoft Sentinel, Exchange, OneDrive, and SharePoint
    • Strong knowledge of data networking principles, including VLANs, VPNs, wireless technologies, and TCP/IP routing (OSPF, DNS, DHCP)
    • Experience supporting and administering operating systems including Windows 10 and Windows Server 2012 or newer (including Hyper-V). Experience with Linux and mobile operating systems (Android/iOS) is considered an asset
    • Experience working with databases such as Microsoft SQL and MySQL
    • Proficiency in Microsoft 365 applications and related tools
    • Familiarity with the Ubiquiti UniFi platform is considered an asset
    • Experience evaluating and implementing solutions that leverage AI tools is considered an asset
    • A valid G driver’s licence with a clean driving record and access to reliable transportation is required, as travel between approximately 25 service locations across Waterloo Region to Mississauga
