Sunbeam Community & Developmental Services is a non-profit, multi-site, multi-faceted organization that is committed to serving individuals living with complex developmental, intellectual, behavioural, and/or physical disabilities.

Sunbeam Developmental Resource Centre (SDRC) is the single point of access to developmental services for children in the Region of Waterloo. SDRC provides case management and clinical services to individuals with developmental disabilities and/or Autism Spectrum Disorders. SDRC also assists them and their caregivers in connecting with community services and supports. SDRC’s services are available to children and adults with developmental disabilities in the Waterloo Region (www.sdrc.ca).

We are presently inviting applications for the position of:

Instructor Therapist – Kitchener Office

Permanent Full-Time (37.5 hours per week)

Job Description:

The responsibility of the Instructor Therapist is to deliver direct ABA (Applied Behaviour Analysis) interventions. This includes providing input into the development and implementation of Behaviour Support Plans (BSPs), collect baseline data, maintaining progress notes (i.e., case notes), the recording and graphing of relevant data, parent coaching, individual and group services, as well as the preparation of teaching materials and also working with, and mentoring volunteers.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Review baseline data with Autism Consultant and Senior Therapist to support goal development and measurement to create a Person-Centred, Behaviour Support Plan and adjust as needed
  • To review the Integrity checklist to keep parent on track of goal
  • To provide input to the Autism Consultant and Senior Therapist to develop goals that are measurable/observable (e.g., behaviour reduction, skill acquisition, or a combination of both)
  • Monitor the progress of interventions and communicate needed changes to Autism Consultant and Senior Therapist
  • Provide services in the approved time frame based on a fee-for-service model
  • Participate in ongoing training related to ABA
  • Report to a Senior Therapist and Manager of Brightside
  • Participate in team activities related to service planning, provision and evaluation
  • To record case notes on all contact with or about client (e.g., telephone, home visits, emails)
  • Ensure compliance with all Sunbeam/SDRC policies and procedures
  • To participate in training as outlined by Sunbeam Community and Developmental Services
  • Other duties as may be assigned

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of ASD and experience with ABA
  • Preferred completed programs include; Behaviour Science Technology, Autism and Behavioural Science Certificate, or Registered Behaviour Technician certificate
  • Degree or diploma in the following, with experience in ABA will be considered: Early Childhood Education, Child and Youth Worker, Psychology, Social work, Teacher education program or a related field
  • Experience in working with Autism Spectrum Disorders and familiar with its impact on all aspects of functioning
  • Familiar with the Services and Supports to Promote the Social Inclusion of Persons with Developmental Disabilities Act, Child, Youth and Family Services Act, Personal Health Information Act, various other federal and provincial legislations, directives and guidelines, corporation bylaws, policies and procedures
  • Familiarity with the special challenges presented by Dual Diagnosis with an Autism Spectrum Disorder.
  • Experience working with groups and families
  • Excellent consulting and oral/written communication skills
  • Experience using a consultative model in a community setting
  • Requires the use of computer (e.g., WORD, Excel, Power Point, graphing and creation of charts)
  • Excellent organizational skills and time management
  • Knowledge of Trauma Informed Services
  • Emergency First Aid and CPR
  • NVCI Training
  • Valid driver’s license, clean driving record and reliable transportation
  • Availability to work some evenings and weekends
